The here and now
The past matters, but it’s felt in the present. That’s where we meet it, and where it can change.
You’ve invested years and a lot of money in trainings, and you still feel there’s more to reach with your clients. Experiential tools with a Gestalt approach help you go deeper, beyond coping skills and past the story, into what your client is experiencing in the room, right now. You don’t learn them by reading about them; you learn them by experiencing them. My trainings are affordable and hands-on: you see the interventions in action, try them yourself, and leave ready to bring them into your next session.
You probably remember it: Fritz Perls, a cigarette, Gloria in the chair, and a style that reads now as something being done to somebody. For many clinicians, that one session was the whole introduction, and Gestalt never came up again. The work kept evolving, but what it has become never made it into the classroom to replace those films. Its chair work helped pave the way for approaches you may already use, like emotion-focused therapy, schema therapy and IFS.
The film is from the 1960s. The work has kept moving.
Gestalt is a humanistic, experiential approach developed by Fritz and Laura Perls. “Gestalt” means “whole” in German, and that’s the heart of it: we work with the whole person (body, emotions, thoughts and relationships) and with what’s happening in the room, in the moment. When Gestalt interventions are applied, the person is invited to enter their experience rather than talk about it from a distance. These interventions tend to uncover the deep-rooted causes of a person’s patterns, and healing comes from awareness and acceptance in the here and now. That’s what makes it organic and lasting.
The past matters, but it’s felt in the present. That’s where we meet it, and where it can change.
Noticing what you feel, think and do, and how you do it, is already part of the healing.
The relationship between client and therapist is part of the work. How we connect in session shows how the client connects with their own emotional experience.
Instead of talking about a feeling, we create an intervention in the moment to explore it, so new options come from experience, not instruction.
Needs that were never satisfied are still looking to be met. Gestalt gives them a place to finally be completed.
Gestalt is meant to be learned by entering the experience and witnessing the unfolding process.

The style in that film has aged, but many of Perls’s ideas haven’t. One still sits at the center of the work: awareness. He described three zones: the world around you (outer), your body (inner), and the internal dialogue in between (middle). Choose a ring to explore each one, or press Begin for a guided minute.
I am aware of…
Notice how your attention moved from one zone to another. That’s the awareness continuum, and in a session, it’s what we follow. In a workshop or at the free monthly Here & Now, we do this together and see where it leads.
Reading about Gestalt rarely tells you what to do when a client goes quiet in the middle of an exercise. What does is witnessing the intervention unfold in a live demonstration, then entering the work yourself. That’s what integrates it, and how it moves from your notes into your sessions.
When I opened my practice in 2020, I asked a group of therapists whether anyone was curious about learning Gestalt, and I was flooded with responses. That became my first course, Introduction to Gestalt Therapy, which ran live for two years and now comes with every paid workshop. It also became my mission as a passionate Gestalt therapist: to make this work accessible to other clinicians through affordable, experiential training.

“What made it special was its experiential component. Instead of just showing us the techniques as something to admire, Carmen had us work with our own material in real time, then asked us to stay with what came up. That’s what changes the way you handle a client afterward. I would take another training with her, and I would send a supervisee.”
“A few years ago, I completed Carmen’s Introduction to Gestalt Therapy course, and I still recommend it to colleagues who want Gestalt taught as something that can be carried out, not merely described.
The material was thorough and well organized, but what made it special was its experiential component. Instead of just showing us the techniques as something to admire, Carmen had us work with our own material in real time, then asked us to stay with what came up. It is precisely this kind of experience that changes the way you handle a client afterward. Reading about the empty chair, or about contact and interruption, is one thing; going through the moment when you want to move on but are asked to stay is another. That experience is the difference.
Carmen teaches with genuine enthusiasm rather than putting on a show, and she always makes clear not only what she is doing but why. She gave direct answers to questions, including the practical ones that come up when you try to use the approach in a typical session: timing, resistance, and when not to push an experiment. She held the group so we could take risks while staying connected with her and with one another.
I practice Gestalt within a relational tradition and have definite views on how it should be taught. Carmen works in the present tense and in the body, and she teaches it that way. I would take another training with her, and I would send a supervisee.”
“I think Gestalt can really deepen the clinical work because it helps you get beyond just talking about what’s happening and actually experience it with the client. The guided fantasy and dream work can bring out things that may not come up in regular conversation. Gestalt is an amazing clinical tool, but you are the one who makes the difference. You are an incredible teacher.”
“It’s a very informative and experiential door to the Gestalt approach, which can enrich your skill set and increase your confidence as a therapist.”
“It was absolutely awesome. This was a hands-on approach to Gestalt Dream Work and Guided Fantasy, and I took so much valuable information away from the training. 10/10, you did an amazing job.”
“The training that Carmen does is phenomenal. It’s very experiential, and if you are already working with clients, you can definitely adopt these practices. For the skills and learning, I 1000% recommend it.”

“The encounter exceeded my expectations; Carmen is a talented Gestalt therapist who delivered the material and answered questions with much thought, detail and passion. I took in every word. I immediately connected my psychodynamic/relational background and saw the benefit of Gestalt. This encounter marks a change in how I will work with clients in a deeper, more Gestalt manner.”
“I want more of these trainings.”
“It has helped me to address certain issues much better with my clients.”
“It was really informative and I use some of its techniques with my current clients.”

Change happens when we become fully aware of who we are, not when we try to become who we’re not. That’s why the change feels organic: it grows from the client’s own experience, so it stays.
